  • Date of publication: 19 January 2026

Zvikomborero Maziyanhanga is a dedicated PhD researcher affiliated with the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. His research centers on the complex dynamics of Zimbabwean migration in South Africa, with a specific focus on the multifaceted experiences of migrants as they navigate legal precarity, prolonged waiting periods, and their sense of belonging in urban environments, particularly in Johannesburg.

Employing qualitative research methods and life history techniques, Maziyanhanga's work delves into the nuanced, everyday repercussions that temporary legal regimes impose on migrants’ lives. By capturing their emotional states and aspirations for the future, he aims to illustrate how fluctuating legal statuses impact their social integration and identity formation.

As a member of Migration Mobilities Bristol, Maziyanhanga is actively engaged in discussions and initiatives surrounding migration issues. Currently, he is conducting fieldwork in Johannesburg, where he is serving as a Visiting Researcher hosted by the Gauteng City-Region Observatory. This role provides him with valuable access to local networks and resources, further enriching his research and enabling him to contribute to a deeper understanding of migration experiences in urban South Africa.
