The Role of Data in Promoting Human Rights and Development in Gauteng
The Gauteng Provincial Office of Statistics South Africa organized a thought-provoking webinar entitled 'Data for Human Rights - Understanding Human Rights Through Data' on 7 March 2025. The primary goal of this event was to emphasize the crucial role that data plays in understanding, monitoring, and promoting sustainable development and social equality across the Gauteng region.
During the session, participants were privileged to hear from Dr. Laven Naidoo, a Senior Researcher at the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO). Dr. Naidoo presented an in-depth analysis of the latest findings from the Quality of Life Survey, which offers valuable insights into the living conditions and well-being of residents in Gauteng. His presentation shed light on several significant trends and patterns that can drive tangible improvements in the daily lives of citizens, facilitated by the development of effective data ecosystems. Through a nuanced understanding of this data, stakeholders can better address the challenges faced by diverse communities in the province, fostering a greater commitment to human rights and equality in Gauteng.
