GCRO and GDED Host Second Roundtable on GCR-EGEGDP 2030

The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED), recently convened the second roundtable focused on the formulation of the Gauteng City Region Employment Growth and Economic Development Plan (GCR-EGEGDP) 2030. This event attracted a wide array of participants, including representatives from leading academic institutions, policymakers, and key stakeholders from the industrial sector, all of whom contributed their insights and expertise.

Discussions during the roundtable centred around nine critical pillars aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth within the region. These pillars include:

  1. Modernizing the Provincial Economy: Emphasizing the integration of cutting-edge technology and innovative practices across various sectors.
  2. Creating Industrial Ecosystems: Fostering collaborations between businesses and institutions to enhance productivity and economic resilience.
  3. Reindustrializing the Gauteng City Region Economy: Focusing on revitalizing traditional manufacturing sectors while investing in new industries to diversify the economic base.
  4. Implementing a Trade and Investment Plan: Strategizing to attract both local and foreign investments and enhancing trade relations to stimulate economic activity.
  5. Unlocking Investment Opportunities: Identifying and promoting sectors with high potential for growth to encourage investment.
  6. Facilitating Digital Transformation: Supporting businesses in adopting digital technologies to improve efficiency and reach broader markets.
  7. Achieving Radical Spatial Transformation: Planning for urban development that prioritizes equitable access to resources and amenities.
  8. Providing Business Development Support: Offering resources and training to entrepreneurs and small businesses to foster growth and innovation.
  9. Ensuring Water and Energy Security, as well as Safety and Security: Developing strategies to safeguard essential resources while maintaining a safe environment for economic activities.

Dr. Mamokete Modiba, a Senior Researcher at the GCRO, provided a comprehensive overview of the primary areas of focus for economic planning in the Gauteng City Region during her presentation. She articulated the importance of a collaborative approach to economic development, where diverse stakeholders work together to navigate the complexities of the region's economic landscape in pursuit of inclusive growth and sustainable prosperity.
