State of the GCR
The State of the Gauteng City-Region Review aims to contribute to ideas around how to build an integrated, sustainable and globally competitive city-region which provides more equal opportunities and a better quality of life for all its residents. The Review, published as a set of intereactive applications, highlights key dynamics and trends affecting the GCR’s economy, society, governance and environment. Drawing on the GCRO’s diverse skill set and making use of maps, graphs, info-graphics and diagrams in order to make the GCRO’s extensive research as accessible as possible, the Review is available in two versions.

Image Gallery
The image gallery is an illustration of the Gauteng City-Region (GCR) highlighting intriguing aspects of the GCR and prompting us to think about it in terms other than merely a place where we live and consume. The selection of images reveals the different aspects of this multi-faceted ‘personality’ of the GCR and deepens our understanding of the complexity of this space, with the images standing as clues to a spatial identity we are still exploring.

Ward Profile Viewer
The ward profile viewer, an update of the 50 priority wards application, is a new innovative application offering a comparative spatial view of a range of demographic (Census 2011), poverty (StatsSA Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index) and GCRO QoL survey indicators across the Gauteng City-Region (GCR). The indicators are mapped at a municipal or ward-level, viewable at a Gauteng-wide or zoomed in local ward-level, assisting both local and provincial government with identifying local areas for targeted interventions.

Urban Observatory
In 2015 the GCRO partnered with ESRI to upload Tshwane and Ekurhuleni to their Urban Observatory site. Johannesburg already existed and the addition of Gauteng's other two metro's ensured that the province's major centres were represented. The ESRI Urban Observatory is a powerful tool for comparing various indicators and data sets across different cities in the world at the same scale.

Village of 100
Urban data gallery ‘Gauteng as a village of 100 people’ is an interactive animation that presents Gauteng as a village of 100 people. In this interactive realm, 100 animated people roam, with each person representing 1% of the respondents of GCROs Quality of Life IV (2015/16) survey. A series of questions from the survey show aspects of the life circumstances and opinions of people in the city-region through five interactive scenarios. Each scenario has five variables that a user can select, to reflect different results from the survey.

QOL Survey Viewer
In 2009, GCRO commissioned its first Quality of Life (QoL) survey with a sample of 6600 respondents to measure the quality of life, socio-economic circumstances, attitudes to service delivery, psycho-social attitudes, value-base and other characteristics of the Gauteng City-Region. 2011 saw a second QoL survey being undertaken, this time with 16729 sample points across Gauteng. The third QoL survey was commissioned in 2013, with a co-investment by the three metropolitan municipalities producing a sample of 27490 respondents. The QoL survey data viewer provides easy online access to the QoL survey data. Most of the QoL survey variables are selectable, with an option to cross tab by local municipal boundaries or other demographic variables.

Barometer
The GCRO Barometer depicts developmental progress in the Gauteng City-Region in a single interactive graphic, using 38 indicators across 10 key sectors. It serves as a tracking and diagnostic tool to inform policy makers and the public on where development progress is being made, and areas of concern. The Barometer shows progress against three base years (2002, 2007 and 2011) in the last year for which data could be collected across all indicators, i.e. 2012.

Interactive GIS Viewer
The GCRO GIS website was developed as an interactive tool to assist both local and provincial governments, to better understand the Gauteng City-Region and make informed decisions about development in the GCR. The application, launched in September 2010, allows the user to visualize GCR base data and themed layers, by offering different perspectives of the GCR, such as population distribution, economic and environmental datasets, spatial structure, and the latest Quality of Life survey results as maps and graphs. The new GIS site was developed to replace the current Flex GIS viewer, providing a range of new data and broader access across multiple devices (including mobile phones and tablets). The current viewer will be discontinued in a few months’ time.

Interactive Data Visualisations
A set of exciting interactive visualisations, providing a unique view of key data and trends in the Gauteng City-Region. The visualisations range from an analysis of getting to work, to Digital Arts student project visualisations of GCRO’s primary datasets such as the Quality of Life (QoL) survey and survey of migrant traders.
